On July 29, 2016, President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill that requires labeling of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO), therefore is expected to be enacted by the federal legislation. In 2014, the state of Vermont signed the mandatory labeling of GMO, and the law took effect on July 1, 2016.

As President Obama signed the mandatory GMO labeling of foods, all foods must carry a text label, a symbol or an electronic code readable by smartphone that indicates whether the food contains genetically modified ingredients, or GMO. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) would have two years to provide relevant ordinance enforcement.

Foods that have meat, poultry, and eggs as the main ingredients will be excluded from the mandatory GMO labeling.

Companies that export food to the U.S. is also expected to be equipped with preparation for compliance with the upcoming regulations.
